Idea of the morning:
What if side-street and non-thoroughfare urban communities could, block by block, opt to have their street or parking spaces removed and replaced with a greenway? Just tear it all up. Plant grass with some paths.
Goods:
1.) Reduction in road noise (for obvious reasons), resulting in a more pleasant place to live.
2.) Hello, green space, anyone?
3.) Promote local, sustainable, healthy living in the community.
4.) Increase the pedestrian and bicycle friendly spaces in the city.
5.) Easier access to buried utility lines, most likely.
Bads:
1.) Potential to fragment car-traffic patterns in the city in an infuriating unpredictable way.
2.) Business delivery access becomes more interesting (maybe for the better, though!).
3.) Hmm. I like the idea, so I haven’t gotten too many of these yet.
